Welcome to the website for Oficina da Capoeira, Chichester.

Currently the group is on a brief hiatus whilst the instructor takes a break to settle in with his new born second daughter.

Classes will return, watch this space!

Weekly update 25th September

Firstly, this week Monday class is as normal, but Thursday's class has been moved to Friday, 20:00 - 21:30.

The competition to guess the weight of my daughter now has a prize fund of £22. Guessing a weight costs £1 - half the money goes to the prize fund, and the other half will help fund Oficina da Capoeira, Chichester's expenses.

Another way to help support our group is to sign up to easyfundraising - when you shop online through easyfundraising then we'll get a cut from the sale, and even better, it won't cost you any more to use. We've already raised over £25 through it, which has helped cover costs.

Not sure when this video is from, but it's clearly from the days of VHS!

See you all in class!

Guess Graduado Kung Fu's Daughter's weight sweep stake

My first child is due on October 19th!

To help raise a little money for our group there is a sweep stake to guess her weight.

  • Each entry costs £1, and there is no limit on the number of times you can enter.
  • The winner will receive 50% of the income from the sweep stake, and Oficina da Capoeira, Chichester will receive the other 50%.
  • In the event that no one guesses the exact weight, we will choose the closest correct entry. In the event that two people are equally close, the smallest weight will be the winner.
  • You might have to be patient for the official announcement of the winner - I will just have had my first child after all!
  • You can email me (, text (07909027435) leave a comment below or see me in person to guess the weight.
  • Payment can be given in person or by BACS transfer (bank details given on request, use your name as a reference).
  • I will update this spreadsheet as often as I can, and it should be dynamic. If two people pick the same weight, it will be first come first served. For those who miss out on their initial chosen weight(s), I will reply to you directly to let you know, and you can have your money back or pick again.
  • Neither Helen or myself are hoping for, or expecting, to enter the Guiness Book of World Records this year, however, this spreadsheet does accommodate that eventuality.

Weekly update 18th September

A reminder that Monday class is as normal this week, but this Thursday the class will be slightly later, from 20:00 to 21:30.

We also have an opportunity to order some abada (capoeira trousers). Mestrando Primo will be in Brazil in December and can pick some up for us, and he will be able to deliver them at our workshop on 28th January. They will cost £35 for adults, £30 for children. Ideally I would need the money by 1st December.

Also in December, Oficina da Capoeira will be celebrating its 20th anniversary! Whilst there will be a big party over in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, we'll be having our own celebrations in the UK! Instrutor Lua and I are putting the details together, but we'll be having a special workshop in December.

To finish, here's a video for a lovely capoeira project - "Capoeira sem Fronteira"

Weekly update 12th September

This week and next there will be a little disruption to the Thursday classes, apologies for the inconvenience.

This Thursday (15th September) Thursday 22nd the class will be later than normal, 20:00 -21:30. The week after, the class will be on Friday instead.

This is because I have to be at a couple of school events.

Monday classes as usual!

It's been great to see the new students coming after the Get Active Festival, if you're interested, it's never too late to give it a go!

Here's a nice video showing explaining a little bit more about what capoeira is:

See you all in class!

Weekly update 4th September

Firstly, a big thank you to Professora Bia for her fantastic workshop yesterday. It was a great session, and lovely to meet her students too! A reminder that the workshop was to help raise funds for their family after their recent tragedy.

A thank you also to Phill and Saiya-jin for helping out at the Get Active Festival today - you can read more about that here.

There is a new Oficina da Capoeira CD out in Brazil, from Mestrando Gavial:

It will likely cost £15 - £20, and as soon as we have sorted out shipping some to the UK, we will know the exact cost, and when it will become arrive.

As mentioned last week, we have some other events on the horizon too:

I am pleased to announce that Mestrando Primo will be giving our annual end of January workshop! More details to come, but keep the Saturday 28th January free!

We will also have our annual end of May workshop on the last weekend of May. More details to come, but it will be on Saturday 27th or Sunday 28th May.

Also, keep the first weekend of August free. It will be our first festival, and a chance to get your first coloured corda. Again, more details will come soon!

We'll finish with a nice roda from Professor Neguinho, from Oficina da Capoeira in Belgium:
